Parental controls on iPhone & iPad

Everything lives inside Screen Time. Set it up from your own iPhone using Family Sharing, so you manage your child's device remotely and they can't undo it.

Steps verified — July 2026

Set up Family Sharing + Screen Time

Settings → [your name] → Family Sharing
  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Family Sharing and add your child (create a child Apple Account if they don't have one).
  2. Still in Family Sharing, tap your child's name → Screen Time → Turn On Screen Time.
  3. Create a Screen Time passcode that is different from any code your child knows. Without it, everything below can be turned off.

Downtime and App Limits

Family Sharing → child → Screen Time
  1. Set Downtime for sleep hours (e.g., 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM). Only apps you allow will work.
  2. Add an App Limit for the Games category (e.g., 1–2 hours/day). Weekday and weekend schedules can differ.
  3. In Always Allowed, keep Phone and Messages available so your child can always reach you.

Communication Safety (very important)

Screen Time → Communication Safety
  1. Turn on Communication Safety. The iPhone detects nudity in photos sent or received in Messages, blurs them, and shows the child safety guidance.
  2. This runs on the device itself — Apple doesn't see the photos. There is no good reason to leave it off for a minor.

Content restrictions and purchases

Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions
  1. Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  2. In Content Restrictions → Apps, set the age rating that matches your child (e.g., 9+ or 12+).
  3. In Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites.
  4. In iTunes & App Store Purchases, require your approval for installs. With Family Sharing, turn on Ask to Buy — every download sends you a request first.

Communication Limits

Screen Time → Communication Limits
  1. Limit who your child can talk to during allowed screen time to Contacts Only.
  2. During Downtime, restrict communication to specific contacts (you, family).
